Patricio

A delightful, mysterious magician who has a great affinity for tricks, shows, and big hats. They primarily communicate by sign language or written text, as they are selectively mute. Little is known about their background - they don’t even have a last name.

Where did Patricio come from? It’s their greatest trick.

• Information about Patricio is strangely limited - they are the only character without a surname, even a made-up one. They appear to have no meaningful familial connections with any other character in the cast.
  • The little that is known is their claim that they were raised by a legendary magician Patrocinio, from which they received their name. Patricio speaks about their mentor with great reverence, saying that their hat is a treasured gift from them.
• Cartomancy and tarot cards are one of many hobbies in spiritual mysticism that they have. They will eagerly offer to do readings for people, claiming that the cards have an accurate and consistent track record.
• Rabbits are a sore spot for Patricio, as they claim to always mess up tricks that involve them.
  • This appears to be the case for most living things, which is why Patricio usually performs solo.
• Even though stage magic and supernatural magic are technically contradictory classifications, Patricio enthusiastically practices both of them. They believe that tricking one’s perception and influencing reality itself are simply two sides of the same coin.
• As they’ve traveled throughout the world and managed to live through the harshest, strangest conditions, Patricio has picked up many survivalist techniques. One is their ability to cook based off of ingredients that can be found easily in the wild.
  • Soups are their favorite dishes, as they particularly enjoy using a cauldron (pot) to make their magical brew (rustic stew).
  • Patricio’s method of learning is sheer trial and error. They have gotten sick many, many times from trying to eat something that is poisonous. One benefit to this is that they’ve grown a hearty immunity to food that may otherwise kill someone.
• Their Specter was apparently one that was with another human but was abandoned - something rare and difficult to achieve, yet possible if one channels energy into severing their bond. This made Patricio’s bonding process with them take much longer, as their Musmushutu was incredibly unstable.
• Ever since they were young, Patricio says that they were very timid around other people. They were tormented by other children and, lacking parental support to fall back on, had no way of defending themselves except with their perceived ‘weirdness’. There was apparently one particular incident in which they snapped and got in trouble - drawing the attention of traveling showman Patricinio, who would end up unofficially adopting them.
  • Since then, Patricio developed their current gentle, yet intimidating disposition. They have demonstrated varying levels of morbid curiosity and seem unaware of their own cruelty at times.
• Alcohol isn’t a vice Patricio enjoys partaking in. Instead, they prefer engaging with… other substances.
• Selective mutism, by nature, is purposeful and not due to a physical or mental condition. Though Patricio ultimately prefers expressing themselves this way, the original reason was due to their mentor suffering from tongue cancer. They had chosen to limit their speaking out of respect.
  • They can still be heard making sounds now and then, though it appears to be involuntary.
• Inventory is never a problem for Patricio due to their Value; their satchel often contains hundreds of items at a time, all shrunk down for ease of access.
  • Many of them are jars. Patricio has a deep fondness for jars due to their utility.
• Since they are notably tall (the tallest of the competitors in the 200th season), Patricio often bends at the waist when around other people. This had lead to some back issues, which is why they’ll stop what they’re doing and lie down for seemingly no reason.
• Paola McLantern, a self-proclaimed witch and similar practitioner of tricks and the occult, is a close friend and admirer of Patricio. Because she has a Value that can create genuine illusions, they would consult each other on both matters of performative and supernatural magic.
• Eating certain foods before they sleep will directly affect their dreams. For example, something spicy will make the dream more stressful, and something cold will make movement within the dream slow down.
  • Patricio enjoys eating dairy products, as they apparently allow for lucid dreaming.
• Although most characters have their 18 points distributed throughout their stats, Patricio is the only one to exhibit equal skill in all 6. This may either be a nod to their ‘jack-of-all-trades’ skillset or simply due to how little is known about them.
  • Oojin notes that they don’t seem to have any particular weaknesses or strengths. They are a very flexible person who is proficient in all stats yet paradoxically excels in none.
• Keepsakes from their past adventures can be found among their belongings. Patricio guards these fiercely, placing an strange amount of value in otherwise useless knickknacks, such as dried plants, vials of unknown fluid, and mis-matched buttons.
