Maura Hunter

A rowdy, sharp-tongued rocker who has no qualms shooting both barbs and bullets at whim. She routinely challenges people to fights, crowing both physical superiority and battle acumen. Her past is murky, and the people who do know her say that she’s changed over the years.

• Where most Values in the Mass Manipulation family focus on the alteration of existing mass, DRAFT is a rare exception. It allows the complete creation of new mass in exchange for either ‘ingredient’ mass (mass reduced to a malleable, somewhat edible form) or the user’s health. Though Maura is capable of the former, she mostly relies on the latter due to its convenience in the absence of sacrificial mass.
  • DRAFT may be the reason why Maura has a tendency to pick up and swipe things. Along with the fact that DRAFT creations can be re-utilized as ingredient mass, it’s no wonder that Maura’s living space is a hoarder’s nightmare.
  • The scars throughout her body are both the consequences of physical altercations and her Value. She claims that she’s learned to dull the pain and even get some masochistic pleasure out of it.
• In her youth, she attended a public school alongside fellow competitor Bri De Los Santos. Bri says that, at this time, Maura wasn’t nearly as extreme as she is today, and she even made a decent friend.
  • In brief conversations with Rowan Chaudhary, she notes that his carefree immaturity reminds her of her youth. Apparently, her Chroma was brighter then, as well, resembling more of a classic red than her current maroon.
• Though she doesn’t have a particularly high tolerance, she prefers hot and spicy food.
• Her iconic red bass guitar was actually her own creation - one she had accomplished as a teenager. It remains her proudest summon, as it took many attempts to create the look she wanted.
  • Maura is an avid fan of rock music and even flitted around a couple of bands with her guitar. However, since she has the attitude of a soloist, she has had trouble cooperating with her fellow musicians.
• Her disappearance in her late teenage years is connected to the sudden and brutal death of her parents, decorated military veterans Charles and Katherina Hunter. She notes that she couldn’t have survived that time without her Specter, which she found and bonded with briefly after the tragedy.
• Emil Zsoldos, a notable figure in the military known for his battle prowess and brutal fighting abilities, is a deeply inspiring figure for Maura. She notes that he reminds her of her father.
  • She also admires Regina Pretorius, another notable military figure.
• Large glasses are not only a stylistic choice but a necessary accessory, as her eyes have been the victim of her Value in the past. Particularly strenuous summons can render her dazed and temporarily blinded.
• Little can be deciphered about what her current ‘occupation’ is. She describes her day job as that of a lowly retail worker, but she seems much more active during the night.
• In spite of her lax attitude towards traditional academics, Maura is quite intelligent and somewhat of a prodigy. She brags that she barely had to study to get good marks during her school days and was well on track to an effortless early degree.
• She has retained a strong British accent (despite growing up in America) out of sheer force of will and spite.
• Her fluidity in regards to gender identity and presentation ties to Maura’s pride in their body. They feel that their physicality is their strongest asset, and thus will show off their respective femininity/masculinity to prove how easily they can shape their form.
  • Maura’s overtly sexual posturing appears to be more a product of this pride than any legitimate interest, as she herself hasn’t had many physically intimate relationships.
  • Maura also enjoys antagonizing people who want to make an effort to gender them correctly, such as by giving vague descriptions of their current pronouns. This seems to add to the notion that their fluidity is truly for their own comfort (and sadistic enjoyment) and not for others’ approval.
• Bri is a fellow competitor who appears to be a target of both interest and disdain, mostly due to their shared history. Maura will lambast Bri’s spacey personality, comparing her emotional passivity as that of an inanimate object. Her aggression is unusually reciprocated by Bri, who doesn’t react strongly to most things.
  • This is in sharp contrast to Maura’s admiration for Bri’s mothers and grandmother, who all work in the military.
• Of the competitors in the 200th season, Maura is the most physically capable - in combat, at the very least. On her off time, Maura is likely training, fighting, or sparring with an unfortunate volunteer.
• Danger and risk seem hardly a frightening concept to Maura. In fact, though she can express surprise and reluctance, she appears incapable of expressing fear and apprehension around others.
• Yuna Chakrabarti notes that, when Maura is normally using her summoned guns around others, the ‘bullets’ are merely condensed energy, which can result in injury but no physical puncture that can fatally wound. She finds this odd as she is convinced that Maura has killed before with those very weapons.
