EW Hey, Juney!
EW Are these edible?
You have to yell a bit to reach her, since she’s almost a block away.
JN Huh?
When she hears you, she turns around, eyes wide.
JN El!
JN How did you - get over here!
She rushes over in record time. She tries grabbing it out of your hand, though you quickly hide it behind you.
JN What is that? What is that in your hands?
JN Put it down!
EW No! It's for us!
JN Dont just dig up any plant you see!
JN Geez. And we just washed our hands too.
JN What were you thinking going through the dirt like that?
She looks a lot grumpier than you had hoped. Why doesn't she think about the big picture?
EW It's food!
EW See? They look like the… onion guys.
EW There’s a bulb at the bottom, too! Just look!
You bring it back in front of her but keep it close enough to your body so she can’t take it. Her expression changes.
JN Youre right. These are wild onions.
JN Where did you…?
You gesture to the patch of tall, gangly grass next to you.
EW Right here!
There are a couple of grassy spots in this town which help break up the ugly brick-and-stone monotony. You can't help but be drawn to them, unlike Jenny, who's always looking at the buildings with smoke and noise coming out of them.
EW This is good, right?
EW Please don’t be so mad.
EW I wanted to do a good thing.
JN ...
She sighs and rustles your hair.
JN As long as you clean them before putting them away.
JN And you wash your grubby hands.
EW Sweet!
You crouch over the grassy patch. You pick a handful more, shake them to get some of the dirt off, then stuff them in the skinny pocket of your bag. It'll smell a little onion-y later, but you don't mind.
As you return to her side, she's still wearing that stern expression.
EW What?
EW Do you want to carry some, too?
JN Its not about the onions!
EW Geez, okay. I'll wash my hands soon.
JN Its not that either.
JN El you...
JN You have to stay close to me.
EW It's not like I skipped town.
JN You were still way too far for comfort! I couldve lost you!
JN What if someone takes you?
JN What if someone takes me?
JN Its just really important we watch out for each other.
EW ...
Why is she making you feel bad? She should've paid closer attention to you and not those loud, ugly buildings. But you're not brave enough to say it too loud.
EW (…it’s your fault for not noticing.)
JN What was that?
You stand back up, holding onto your bag.
EW I said, you could try looking better.
JN Thats not what you said.
EW You could try hearing me better, too!
You stick your tongue out. She furrows her brows and gives you her best 'listen to your big sister' look.
JN Stop messing around.
JN Stick close to me and dont go wandering off.
She starts back down the street. You consider running off out of protest, but you end up following, begrudgingly. It's not like you could go anywhere else. Not without her.
After another block, you speak up again.
EW I don’t like this place.
She exhales, blowing some hair out of her face.
JN You dont like any place that isnt a farm.
JN Or a forest. Or a jungle.
EW Or a pasture!
JN Thats basically what I said.
EW No, a pasture is a whole other type of place.
EW They’re nice and hilly. And you can see the whole sky.
EW They’re better than forests.
EW And way better than dumb smokey cities.
EW ...dumb cities.
As much as you’re fond of trees, you’ve never liked being enclosed by tall things for too long. Clear land and clear skies just make you want to start running, only stopping to fall on a patch of soft grass. Here, you can't run a meter without strangers yelling at you. Or Jenny yelling at you.
EW Hope there’s more grassy spots here.
EW Maybe we can make an onion dish.
JN Hehe.
EW What?
JN We shouldve named you Billy.
JN You ol goat.
EW Hey!
JN Wynnie finding all the best grass to graze on. Little goat.
She bleats. It's really bad.
EW Goats don't sound like that!
JN Oh yeah? Youre an expert all of a sudden?
EW You were doing it too high up!
EW It's more of a throat-y sound.
You bleat for demonstration's sake.
EW See?
JN You cant see sounds dummy.
EW You know what I mean!
JN I know. Whats your point again?
EW (You're dumb.)
JN Heard that.
EW Good. You're getting better.
EW Elwyn.
EW Anyway, animal sounds aren't just random noises.
EW They're kinda like music. They've got tones and stuff.
EW So, if you're going to make fun of me, at least try to make it accurate.
JN Hehe.
JN Fine. I wont do something so disrespectful again.
JN I will honor your animal code.
JN Promise.
EW Good.
JN Hehe.
EW I'm still mad at you.
JN Aww for what?
EW I wouldn’t need to look for the onions if we had food.
You grumble and cross your arms.
JN Wynnie...
EW I’m starving!
JN Well eat soon.
EW You said that hours ago.
JN Dont pretend like you can tell time.
JN You can barely read.
You consider hitting your sister really hard before you remember that she can beat you up better and faster.
EW Well, I…
EW I can tell by the sun!
EW It was behind the buildings before, and now it’s on top of us.
EW That means the day’s half done, already.
She looks the tiniest bit impressed.
JN The boy can learn. Its a miracle.
EW Just because I’m not your kind of smart doesn’t mean I can’t figure things out.
EW I’m capable, and strong, and…
EW ...and I'm really hungry.
EW Sorry for sounding like a baby, but it's true.
JN ...
JN Youre right.
JN Youve been waiting a while havent you?
She takes out her hand. You un-cross your arms and take it in your own.
JN Im hungry too.
JN I promise. Well find something to eat.
JN Then well find a nice pasture to have a picnic in. Okay?
EW ...can we have hamburgers?
She swings your hand a little as you walk.
JN Well find something.
